ETHNIC GROUPS OF HA GIANG

The Nung:

The Living Earth

Masters of the mountain terra, the Nung people weave their lives into the very fabric of the landscape through earthen architecture and indigo alchemy.

ARCHITECTURE

Trinh Tuong:

Rammed Earth Sanctuaries

Constructed from the very soil beneath their feet, the Trinh Tuong houses of the Nung are architectural marvels of insulation and endurance. Thick walls of compressed clay keep interiors cool in the searing summer and warm against the biting mountain frost.

The process is communal; a ritual of tamping earth into wooden frames that results in a structure that can stand for centuries, maturing in color as it absorbs the history of the families within.

CRAFTSMANSHIP

Indigo Alchemy & Textile Poetry

For the Nung, indigo is more than a color; it is an identity. Every garment begins in the indigo vats—fermented leaves of the *Strobilanthes cusia* plant mixed with lime and wood ash.

LEGACY

Forged in the Karst

The Nung are renowned as the finest blacksmiths in the northern highlands.

ORAL TRADITIONS

Sli: The Echo of the Soul

Sli is a unique form of responsive singing performed in pairs. It is a dialogue between voices that mimics the call and response of nature itself.

"When we sing Sli, the forest stops to listen. It is how we speak to the ancestors and the future at once."
